If you’re looking for a fun new way to cook those sweet potatoes this summer, then look no further than these ultimate grilled sweet potatoes. The perfect blend of sweet and savory, they will be an instant hit and summer staple for your family!
Why this recipe is an instant hit
- Sweet potatoes are such an amazing vegetable. They’re delicious, chock-full of vitamins and minerals, and much lower in starch than their white potato cousins.
- Sweet potatoes contain vitamin A (beta-carotene), vitamin C, manganese, copper, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, potassium, dietary fiber, niacin, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, and phosphorus. They can be used for every meal, including dessert.
- It seems like the recipe is too simple to be delicious, but it’s not. The simplicity just adds to the appeal of these amazing grilled sweet potatoes.
- We make these all summer, and they are always loved by our guests. The grilling adds such a great flavor to them, and it won’t heat up your house when it’s already too hot outside.
The Process
-
Fire up that grill to medium heat, and then let it warm up for a few minutes.
-
Slice the sweet potatoes into 1/4 inch slices, and put them into a big ziplock bag or a big bowl.
-
Add the oil and spices and shake (or stir) well to coat the sweet potatoes.
-
Once the grill is warm, put the sweet potato slices on it in a single layer, and let them cook about 5-7 minutes per side.
Notes from the cook:
- Grilled sweet potatoes should be crisp on the outside, but still a little soft in the middle. They are easy to prep, and require little maintenance on the grill. This makes them the perfect side dish for your next cookout!
- Adding garlic powder to the sweet potatoes is my favorite way to bring out a fantastic savory flavor, while still being able to enjoy the subtle sweetness of this delicious vegetable.
- These would also be delicious as a dessert if you season them with cinnamon and coconut palm sugar, and then let butter melt on top when they are done.
- This recipe works best if the slices are around 1/4 inch thick. But if you make them thicker, just let them cook slightly longer. It’s important to keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.
- These store well for a couple of days in the refrigerator, but they do get softer the longer they are stored. For best results, eat the same day.

Yum! Love new ways to eat sweet potatoes! This one is great for summer!
Yum! I am making these this week. I never thought of grilled sweet potatoes! Blessed to be visiting you from Women with Intention Wednesdays! xo
I hope you do get a chance to make them! They are so delicious!
We eat sweet potatoes every week, but I’ve never grilled them! We always just bake them, but I bet this really brings out the natural sweetness of the potatoes! Yum!
It really does, Victoria! And with the garlic and paprika, it’s such a great mix of flavors. You really should give it a try! 🙂
Hi Stefani, I swinging towards using more sweet potatoes than regular potatoes. These grilled sweet potatoes would be perfect for light summer lunches.
xx
Yes, Debbie, they’re perfect for light lunches too! 🙂
HI Stefani,
I love sweet potatoes of any type and your grilled sweet potatoes look delicious. Have you ever tried the purple? They taste a little bit different but are suppose to be more nutritious. Sometimes I mix both the purple and orange ones together & make about the same recipe you did except I use coconut oil on them with a little bit of Himalayan salt. We actually have a sweet french fry maker that we use after we harvest our sweet potatoes and make french fries with them & freeze them for a quick and easy way to make healthy fries with coconut oil in the oven in the winter. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & Tweeted
Hi Marla, I actually have tried purple sweet potatoes! It was when we were in Hawaii on our honeymoon… they were delicious! I don’t know that I’ve really seen any at the store, but I haven’t been looking either. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there! And awesome idea with freezing the fries, that’s something I’ll need to try for the boys 😉
These look really good! I’m the only sweet potato lover in the family. So I don’t get them often. But maybe I’ll be able to sneak these through. They do like sweet potato chips though, and I got a dehydrator for Christmas that I haven’t even opened yet. I mean really, is it almost July? What am I waiting for! My daughter is asking me to get busy on those chips, so I may be able to sneak a few extra potatoes in for the grill. I hope so, these look delish!
They are SO good, Nikki! Definitely give them a try. They don’t even taste like sweet potatoes with the good seasonings on them, so maybe the rest of the family will like them? 😉 And I totally know what you mean, I got a dehydrator a year ago, and I’ve used it twice. I had such high expectations for it! Haha
I make sweet potato fries in the oven all the time, but I’m going to try this! It looks great and would be perfect for cookouts…Pinning! Thanks for sharing at Welcome Home Wednesdays!
It is the perfect side for cookouts, Crystal! I think they’ll be a hit 😉 Thanks for visiting!
I cannot wait to give these a try! Somehow, the idea of grilling sweet potatoes did not cross my mind but that totally makes sense, right?!? Thanks for sharing on Simply Natural Saturdays.
Yum, sounds great! Sweet potatoes are such a great addition to any meal!
Looks yummy! I can’t wait until the weather warms up here to try on the grill!
You’ll love them! They’re my favorite!
Wanting to make these in the oven. What temperature and how long to cook them for??
I don’t know, that would be completely changing the recipe. I’d try at 400 degrees and keep an eye on them for 20-30 min or so
These were a hit ! So good. I now prefer to have my sweet potatoes this way instead of baked in the oven. I will definitely be making again. Thanks for sharing a great recipe !
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! They’re a family favorite with us too!
