Healthy digestion is so important for proper functioning of our bodies, but often times our digestive systems are sluggish at best. It slows down due to years of processed food, overabundance of sugar, parasites and fungus, and food sensitivities. It can cause many problems, but it can also be fixed with proper diet and detoxing.
Shortly after my second son was born (prior to my Hashimoto’s diagnosis), I had horrible heartburn. It would show up regardless of what I was eating, and I knew something was up. I went to my doctor and they prescribed me Prilosec and told me I had GERD. And I believed them.
I took it for a couple of weeks, but then I did some research on it and found that the problem is usually low stomach acid, not high stomach acid. My naturopath confirmed my research, and I decided to stop taking it.
In addition to not being the correct treatment for my condition, I read that Prilosec could have all kinds of side effects, and that suppressing already low stomach acid is very unhealthy. Our stomach acid is so important, because it kills things like bacteria and parasites in our food. It’s no wonder so many of us have an overabundance of parasites wreaking havoc in our bodies!
So I went looking for other options for my problem.
I was able to stop the prescription and manage my symptoms using essential oils and apple cider vinegar. Suddenly, my heartburn was gone, and my desire to learn more about healthy digestion and how I could help my body grew even more.
I gave up gluten, dairy, and soy. I started making kombucha and taking probiotics and digestive enzymes to help bring my stomach acid levels back up. But my favorite change was adding in lemon water to my routine!
Lemon water has so many benefits, like jump-starting your digestive system after it’s been sleeping at night, and helping to flush out toxins naturally. Talk about creating an environment for healthy digestion! But my absolute favorite benefit is the cravings control.
Seriously, if I drink lemon water in the morning, then I can easily turn down unneeded snacks and my cravings lack that control over me. You should drink a warm glass of it (I do about 4 oz) first thing in the morning, and then wait 20 minutes before eating anything to let it do it’s magic.
Healthy Digestion – Lemon Water on Tap
1 gallon of purified water
(optional) grated ginger root
Juice the lemons into the gallon jug (always use glass, never plastic), and fill it with water. (If you’re adding ginger, then simmer 2 cups of the lemon water with the ginger on the stove for 20 minutes, then let it cool and add it to the gallon jar and fill the rest of the way with water.) Store it in the fridge.
The great thing about this is that it’s concentrated lemon water, so to prepare it in the morning I fill a small glass a little more than halfway with the lemon water concentrate and then top it off with boiling water. Its instantly the perfect temperature and concentration, and I’m able to drink it right away and get my digestive system moving.
I told you this was easy!
Anything that shaves a few minutes off of my morning routine is a bonus to me. And squeezing lemons every morning takes way too much time, let’s be honest. My kids are already yelling at me because I’m not feeding them fast enough, I barely have enough time to feed myself!
Do you drink lemon water in the morning? What benefits have you seen from it?
