There has been a lot of information floating around lately about the use of CBD oil for chronic illness. CBD, or more commonly known as hemp, is legal in all 50 states, unlike the plant it is comes from, cannabis. Now, before you go thinking that I’m just trying to get pot legalized so I can blaze up with my homies, that is not the case here. It’s got legitimate health benefits that I think should be utilized by our healthcare system. And while most people think of cannabis as the illegal drug that causes a high; the truth is, it has been used in a medicinal capacity for much longer than the 85 years it has been outlawed in the United States.
CBD oil, or cannabinoid oil, is one of 60 compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike another compound, (THC or tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not produce a ‘high’ when it is consumed, but carries many of the healing properties on its own.
According to a study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD benefits include being anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant, and has been shown to help treat epilepsy, anxiety, and brain inflammation. This is important to anybody with chronic illness, because these illnesses and autoimmune diseases cause massive amounts of inflammation in the body, which ends up causing many of the symptoms they’re experiencing.
The reduction of inflammation from CBD oil helps with many of these symptoms, which makes life much easier for those who suffer from these diseases. The biggest benefit to CBD oil, however, seems to be its ability to act as a pain reliever.
I’ve been so interested in CBD oil for chronic illness for months now, and have been wanting to try it for the joint pain and anxiety that comes along with Lyme. Liberty Lixir sent me their CBD oil to try, along with their new Infinity Lotion to see if it would help with my issues, and I have been so excited to share it with you!
CBD Oil for Chronic Illness
Liberty Lixir’s Ultra 1,000mg CBD tincture is an isolate, which means:
Isolate CBD is pure CBD. Isolate CBD has been through a rigorous extraction process that removes all other terpenes and cannabinoids from the original plant material. Therefore, isolate CBD does not contain any THC whatsoever and, before being mixed into our products, exists in a crystalline rather than an oil form. Full-spectrum CBD (also known as whole-plant CBD) on the other hand, is a CBD extract that has been through a more simplified extraction process, and still contains trace amounts of other cannabinoids, such as CBN, THC, and CBG and terpenes.
While both types have benefits to offer, I have never tried an isolate before, so I was really looking forward to this. I didn’t notice a whole lot of an effect on my anxiety, but my anxiety has been horrible to try to control for the past 5 years. I haven’t found anything that’s helped long-term yet, so I don’t fault Liberty Lixir for that. However, when I was taking the oil, I did notice that I was a bit more calm than normal, which is a blessing with two crazy boys under 5 at home!
The taste is mostly just a mild, slightly earthy flavor, but overall it doesn’t really taste like much to me.
The Infinity Lotion is a powerful CBD lotion, which offers 600mg per bottle. It also contains Moringa oil, which is synergistic with CBD. This lotion worked wonderfully for my shoulder pain. Applying it before bed helped it to be less achy when I woke up, and less likely to flare throughout the day. I definitely noticed a difference when I was using compared to when I’d forget.
And y’all, I think the best part of this lotion is the scent! I know that I was a little nervous about wearing CBD lotion in case it made me walk around smelling like a Snoop Dogg concert. But it’s got a wonderful, lightly sweet smell that is very pleasant, and the lotion absorbs perfectly.
My husband even used it for his tennis elbow. Sometimes it flares up and is really painful for him, but this lotion seemed to take the edge off.
Now, CBD oil may help with some issues, but it will not work magic if you aren’t doing your part to help it. Inflammation can only be lowered so much if you’re continually eating inflammatory foods and introducing toxic chemicals into your body on a regular basis. For the best results, get on an anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, detox, and really care for your body.
Have you ever used CBD oil for chronic illness? What has your experience been?
I have been given this product as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. This information is purely informational.
This is interesting. As someone with a lot of pain, I like looking for alternative things that may help.
Out of curiosity, is there a point when you could accidentally use too much of it? Like, if your in a lot of pain to where you might want to use a little more than recommended on the bottle, is that safe, or harmful? Do you think it’s something you should use in conjunction with advice from a natural health practitioner, then? Of is it safe to dose yourself and gauge when too much is too much?
Hi Crys! I am not a doctor, but from what I have read, it is highly unlikely to be able to overdose on CBD (or cannabis in general). The bottles all have instructions on them of how to start with dosages, and from there, you listen to your body. You would have to take massive amounts before it would even begin to harm your body (if it even would), and you’d likely go broke first 😉 However if you’re more comfortable running it by your doctor, then you should!
