Among the many different diets and fads out there, one in particular stands out. The paleo diet. Eating paleo is very popular for a good logical reason, and is based on the idea that we should eat like a caveman.
Well, not literally in a cave and doing caveman stuff. The diet revolves around the fact that our caveman ancestors lived on a simple diet and they never had a problem with it! In fact, they lived a long and healthy life as hunters and gatherers.
The Basics of Eating Paleo
Remember, the paleo diet is based on what a hunter and gatherer would readily have thousands of years ago. So, the diet heavily relies on fish, seafood, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and meat (and dinosaur meat perhaps?)
We can safely assume that they cycle eating what is available. There will be times that meat is not part of diet and some times that they would have to eat as much as they could out of a whole mammoth (no freezer yet!) before it goes bad (or they could make mammoth jerky!).
Benefits of Becoming A Caveman
If you look at the big picture, there was no fast food, no processed food, and no ramen. Everything is fresh and eaten as it is; no fancy seasoning. Salt may even be a luxury for some. So, naturally, our predecessors were probably free of most chronic illnesses we face today.
- Building Blocks of Muscles
Our ancestors hunted wild game and ate the leanest meat on the planet. When animal farming wasn’t a fad yet, cavemen hunted gazelles and deer expertly. Today, at least we don’t have to hunt; we can buy lean meat from the butcher.
These meats are rich in protein and testosterone (good news for body builders) and can promote growth, recovery, and repair of damaged bodily tissues.
- Glowing Immunity Against Sickness
Since this diet revolves around a great variety of fruits, vegetables, you essentially improve your immune system. Another thing about eating fruits and veggies are they are rich in vitamins and vitamin precursors.
Vitamin precursors need to be converted by our body before it becomes and effective vitamin. If you already have enough vitamins, our body is smart enough to convert them. You see, that means no vitamin toxicity!
- Optimum Digestion and Absorption
For thousands of years, the human race has adapted (and perhaps evolved) to digesting these types of food. We, the modern human population, can easily enjoy all these food without worrying about getting upset about it. In fact, we are optimized to absorb them in their primitive form.
These are just a few of the amazing benefits of converting to paleo (or should I say reverting?).
When You Are Feeling Sick
We have all known the amazing benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and relaxing benefits of soup. Especially for those of you who have flu. The great thing is, the paleo diet can also give you a yummy version of your momma’s hearty chicken soup!
Or perhaps, your momma’s recipe was paleo after all, and you just didn’t notice! Just in case you want a paleo soup for sick tummy, here is an awesome recipe you could try out.
- 2lbs chicken (organic free range chicken can be your best choice!)
- 1 medium red onion diced
- 8-12 crushed garlic (include the skin for more aromatic and flavorful broth!)
- 2 stalks chopped celery
- 2-4 cubed carrots
- Crushed ginger (put as many you like, add more if you want it tangy)
- Salt to taste
- 6-8 cups water or bone broth
Cut and slice all the ingredients and place it in a large crockpot (or make a bonfire and boil it!) and set on high for four hours.
Do a weird dance while circling on the bonfire with your family and chanting some incomprehensible lyrics.
Or leave it, or watch a movie, or curl under the sheets, or do something worthwhile while you are waiting for it to cook.
Enjoy a hearty paleo chicken crockpot soup.
Sometimes I wonder how happy our cavemen ancestors were when they had tried soup for the first time. Well, there was no internet back then, so this all falls to our imagination. I bet they were extremely happy and had to celebrate it with wine (wait, there’s no wine back then, so maybe with more dancing).
Eating paleo is not as difficult as it may seem. You may even have favored the foods you could cook with the paleo ingredients and don’t just realize it yet. But sorry, you would have to give up cheese and ice cream!
Try out this soup and have a hearty dinner with your family and friends!
